January Photo Competition Winner - Class Exotic Bonsai

February 9, 2017

I bought the Juniper at a wholesale nursery near Benoni. It had taken me about a year to get the owner to budge on it. I immediately got stuck into the wiring of the entire tree including the finer branches. It took around 17 hours to completely wire and style the tree. This was November 2015. At that stage the tree was about 25 years old. The previous owner grew it from a cutting so age was easier to determine.

I entered the tree in the photo competition in 2016. It was still wired and in the large round ceramic pot. It won the photo competition that month in the exotic section.

The tree had bothered me since I took the photo because the pot was out of balance. I removed the tree and planted in a plastic container till I could find the right pot. Funny enough, while scratching around in my pots in the garage I found a round pot which looked too small but there was a chance it would work. I planted the tree in it and the difference was incredible.

I have owned the tree for around a year and a half now and its been a great journey so far. The photo competition has made me record the progress better with my trees. One then realises how much the trees improve over time when we have references.
