Kathy started bonsai 23 years ago when she joined Far West Bonsai Kai. At the first BRAT that she attended in Pretoria, she was invited to join Pretoria Bonsai Kai as well. Charles Ceronio, Louis Nel, John Lynch and Oom Theuns Roos became her mentors.
She started showing her trees within the first 3-4 years of starting bonsai, because that is the way she believe you learn, by allowing your peers to crit and judge your trees. And that is the way it was done in those days. She would then go home and do the neccesary work on her tree to bring it up to standard.
She enjoys competing at BRAT days, and entering her trees in competition, as well as having her trees on display at Bonsai Magic. This ensures that her trees have to look their best all the time At BRAT she has won 62 certificates over the years. At 2016 BRAT Top 10, her trees won 7 of the top ten prizes.
She gets invited to do demos all around South Africa, at club, regional and national level. She has demonstrated in New Zealand for 2 consecutive years, and has been invited to be their international demonstrator at a mini convention in Auckland in 2019.
She has been chairperson at Far West Bonsai Kai for the last 13 years. The club meets at the bonsai nursery Robbie and Kathy own, Bonsai Magic. She has about 250 trees in her collection, that are on display in their gardens all year round. There are about 10,000 bonsai trees in the nursery.
