July 2018 Newsletter

Dear Bonsai People,

Hope you and your trees are all warm and cuddly against the cold, frost, snow or torrential rains all over the country. I have heard horror stories of severe frost and half a collection lost.  My Acacia galpinii is in full leaf, having lost all its leaves and then budded again. Some of my baobabs have still not lost their leaves. Really strange weather all around!

The SABA 2018 Mini Conventionin Bloemfontein is formally underway and bookings are now open.  The booking form is attached and you just need to click on it, fill it in and email back to hanton@vodamail.co.za, using your surname as reference.

Do not forget to get your New Talent Entries ready. Please find attached New Talent Entry form as well as the protocol set up to ensure a fair and transparent competition.

TheAfrican Bonsai Convention 5 has also been confirmed for South Africa.  We are eagerly awaiting dates, venue and demonstrators.  This prestigious event will be hosted by BRAT in Gauteng.  We look forward to the final programme, watch this space!

Annual club subs are now due.  In our last newsletter, we mentioned that the SABA Constitution requires that the organisation is supplied with a list of club member names.  Although only three clubs officially objected to it, a decision was made to re-itemise it for the AGM and vote on it again.  So, please pay your subs in order to be eligible to vote.

Subscriptions, per annum, are as follows:

  • Club members R40per member (no reduction applicable for family, pensioner, scholars etc.

  • Individual members R100,

  • Commercial organisationsadvertising through SABA or claiming affiliation to SABA R200

The bank details are:

Bank : FNB

Branch : Westville  224326

Account number: 62444063078

We would appreciate it if you do not pay by cash deposit as the charges are high, so please use EFT.  To those clubs and individuals who have paid already, thank you for you payment.

The EXCO has decided after legal consultation to register SABA with SARS.  Although it is not necessary, we were advise that in order to open bank accounts, qualify for funding through instances such as Lotto, etc, we would need to be registered. As such, we need to update the Constitution.

In October, we will circulate the agenda, proxy forms, financials for comment and call for items to be included or debated in the Constitution.  We are already working on a draft and is attached for your comments and contributions. The final version will be voted on at the AGM in November.

The committee is working hard on finalising the 2019 calendar and if you have a spreadsheet of things to do, repot or attend to at a certain time of the year, please send it to us to be included. That way, the calendar will be more representative of bonsai throughout South Africa.

Lifetime achievement awards

Nominations for this prestigious award is now open. Please make your submissions, with a detailed motivation to: info@saba.org.zabefore 30 September 2018.

TheSABA Facebook page, although not the official mouth piece of SABA, is a great way to disseminate information. As with any marketing tool (advertisement), some irritate and some are funny. Some are offensive and some do not belong there. As long as what is posted on the page, is bonsai related, you may post.  We of course, prefer SABA affiliated club members to post, but anyone with queries are welcome.  It is an opportunity for clubs to promote their activities and get more members. We do expect our members to be polite to non-members, even if we have answered the same old questions 50 million times!

The last month or so, I have been involved in exams and marking of scripts and have not had a lot of time to post on the SABA blog. Hopefully, I can plan better in future and have a few posts in hand for situations  like this. A suggestion was made to bring back the biographies I had on the old web.  I have started doing so and will in the next few weeks, repost some old ones and do some new ones.  If you have an idea or feel like writing something, please forward me the name or consider sending me your own information.

It is time to start planning the 202 SABA Mini Convention.  If your club or region is interested in hosting it, please send an email to info@saba.or.zaby the 30th of Augustwith your intentions and ideas to host it. We would like to finalise this asap due to the amount of planning that is needed.

Please, please and please communicate with us!  Hope you all stay safe and keep on bonsaiing!

Caroll
